Increased sales tax, repealed exemptions to make up differenceA plan to slash property tax bills by roughly a quarter statewide — but make public schools more reliant on sales tax money — could get approval today to go before voters. The Florida Taxation and Budget Reform Commission is scheduled to consider two proposed constitutional amendments that would eliminate the primary property tax used to pay for public schools. Either proposal — they differ in some respects — would require the Legislature to replace what’s called the schools’ “required local effort” — equal to about $8 billion in 2007-08 — with repealed sales tax exemptions, an increase of up to 1 cent in the statewide 6-cent sales tax or other spending cuts and growth.
